Senior Protection Measure Passes Florida Senate Appropriations Committee
SB 626 Supported by FAHP’s Protect Florida Seniors Now Effort Ready for Consideration by Florida Senate
Tallahassee, Fla. – Protect Florida Seniors Now, an education and advocacy effort led by the Florida Association of Health Plans, Inc. (FAHP), today released the following statement from FAHP President and CEO Audrey Brown regarding Senate Bill 626, sponsored by State Senator Jeff Brandes (R-St. Petersburg) and co-sponsored by State Senator Doug Broxson (R-Pensacola), that was passed today by the Florida Senate Appropriations Committee.
“We thank Senators Brandes and Broxson for sponsoring this legislation, as well as members of the Florida Senate Appropriations Committee for approving SB 626 today in its final committee stop before it is considered by the full Florida Senate.
“SB 626 addresses the significant uncertainties in the long-term care insurance market by expanding the guaranty fund safety net, brings both life and health insurers into the assessment base and equitably splits the liability 50-50 while holding the state harmless.
“This critical legislation ensures that Florida seniors are protected if their long-term care insurer fails, so that they receive the benefits of the policy they purchased.
“We look forward to this being considered by the full Florida Senate and urge lawmakers to adopt this good public policy during the 2019 Session.”
Protect Florida Seniors Now aims to educate Floridians on the importance of enacting long-term care legislation that is specific to Florida, but consistent with the national settlement agreement and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners model act.
